Interview Questions for the Post of Planning Engineer

The role of planning engineer is to oversee all the operation and maintenance of any particular project with coordination with the manager of that project. This can be done either in the office or at the plant where the execution is to be operated. Mostly, largest projects are carried with the link of construction companies, oil companies, rail networks, power plants and government firms. The Project engineer is there to complete the work with the allocated resources and utilizing the allocated time in the most efficient way. Basically, planning engineer is said to be the first brick while organizing team for any project. Some of the responsibilities and duties of planning engineers are:

  • Deciding and pointing out the appropriate techniques and all the activities that are necessary for the project.
  • Using specially designed software that can help them in that particular project.
  • Ensuring client’s demands, according to plan.
  • Supervising the project at every phase.
  • Organization any needed transport for the materials.
  • Ensuring all the risk assessment like cost, time or resource.
  • Deciding on the most appropriate engineering techniques and sequences of activities for each project stage.

While hiring the best person for the post of planning engineer in any firm that puts a demand for this post, some of the interviews were taken. These interviews are particularly divided into two parts, one is based on your technical skills and other is to judge the personality of the person. In technical interview, interviewer can give you some of the scenarios related to your life project and want to judge your technical skills from that, or can ask you question from you theoretical knowledge which you learned in your bachelors or Master’s program. Some of the technical questions that should be prepared before going to the room where you will get judged are:

  • What is the Difference between ACWP, BSWS and BSWP?
  • What is the Difference between MS Project and Primavera?
  • What is the Difference between load cost & resource in any program?
  • What is the Difference between free float and total float?
  • Define activities like flag and milestone?
  • What do you mean by resource allocation and leveling?
  • What is WBS and baseline Program?
  • How will you measure and then compare the progress of your ongoing project?
  • Define total float, constraint, and Open end activity?
  • Difference between Retained & Override Logic?
  • How will you relate budget with Actual Cost value?
  • Difference between Continuous & Interruptible scheduling?
  • How will you monitor the working flow of all teams at single time?
  • How will you follow and go for the baseline of construction plan?
  • How will you make some changes in your program to make it as well-structured and well-planned project?
  • Tell us about one of your experience in which you did a mistake in ongoing project? What are the consequences? How did you managed you project after that mistake?
